Daily 10 Calculation Drill

10 structured questions spanning Tables, Squares, Cubes, Powers, Multipliers & Triplets.

Ready for Today

Why Daily 10 Practice?

  • Gradually ramps difficulty without extreme "Ramanujan" math.
  • Focuses on core competitive exam multipliers (+20% = × 6/5, −20% = × 4/5).
  • Builds instant recall for Tables 1–40, Squares up to 50, Cubes up to 30.
  • Reinforces Pythagorean Triplets and 3-Digit multiplication shortcuts.

How to use this Vedic Maths speed practice tool

  1. Start with Daily 10: ten questions that ramp from squares and cubes to percentage multipliers and base-100 multiplication. Your score, time and a step-by-step breakdown appear at the end.
  2. Use Topic Drills to practise one area without a limit, such as tables 1–40, powers or 3-digit operations.
  3. Revise with Flashcards: tap a card to flip it, then mark it as mastered or review again.
  4. Open Vedic Tricks to see each shortcut worked out step by step for your own numbers.
  5. Keep the Cheat Sheets for quick revision; bookmark the values you keep forgetting and print them.
  6. Build a Custom Test with your chosen topics, number of questions and time per question.

Vedic Maths shortcuts with worked examples

1. Multiplying numbers near 100

a × b = (a + (b − 100)) × 100 + (a − 100) × (b − 100)

96 × 104: deviations −4 and +4. Left part 96 + 4 = 100, right part −4 × 4 = −16, so 10000 − 16 = 9984.

2. Squaring numbers ending in 5

(10n + 5)² = n(n + 1) × 100 + 25

85²: 8 × 9 = 72, so 85² = 7225.

3. Multiplying a two-digit number by 11

Write the sum of the two digits between them, carrying if the sum is 10 or more. 47 × 11: 4 | 11 | 7 → 5 | 1 | 7 = 517.

4. Percentages as multipliers

A 20% rise means × 6/5 and a 20% fall means × 4/5. If a ₹45,000 salary rises 20%, the new salary is 45,000 × 6/5 = ₹54,000.

5. Checking answers with digital roots

The digital root of a product equals the digital root of the product of the digital roots. For 38 × 47 = 1786: roots 2 and 2 give 4, and 1 + 7 + 8 + 6 = 22 → 4, so the answer passes the check. It can rule options out, but it cannot prove an answer is right.

Why calculation speed matters in CSAT

The UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination has two papers. General Studies Paper-II, called CSAT, is qualifying: you need at least 33% to have your Paper-I score counted. Its syllabus includes basic numeracy and data interpretation at Class X level, so most quantitative questions reward fast, accurate arithmetic rather than advanced maths.

  • Memorise the anchors: squares to 50, cubes to 30, 2¹⁰ = 1024 and the fraction values of common percentages.
  • Estimate first: round the numbers to see which options are possible before you calculate exactly.
  • Avoid common mistakes: forgetting the carry in the ×11 trick, mixing up 1/7 (14.29%) and 1/8 (12.5%), and applying successive percentages by simple addition.
  • Track accuracy as well as speed: a wrong answer in the Prelims carries a negative mark, so a fast guess can cost more than a skipped question.

Key facts

  • 1/7 = 14.2857…%, 1/6 = 16.67%, 1/8 = 12.5% and 1/9 = 11.11%.
  • 2⁶ = 4³ = 8² = 64 and 2¹² = 4⁶ = 16³ = 64² = 4096.
  • Common Pythagorean triplets: (3, 4, 5), (5, 12, 13), (8, 15, 17), (7, 24, 25) and their multiples.

Frequently asked questions

What is Vedic Maths?

Vedic Maths is a set of mental calculation shortcuts presented by Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha in his book Vedic Mathematics, first published in 1965. It uses patterns such as working from a base of 10, 100 or 1000 to make multiplication, squaring and division faster.

How can I improve my calculation speed for UPSC CSAT?

Practise 10 to 15 minutes daily with timed drills, learn tables up to 30, squares up to 50 and cubes up to 30 by heart, and convert percentages into fractions. Aim for accuracy first, then cut the time per question.

Is CSAT a qualifying paper?

Yes. UPSC's notification states that General Studies Paper-II (CSAT) of the Civil Services Preliminary Examination is a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%. Its syllabus includes basic numeracy and data interpretation at Class X level.

How does the base 100 multiplication trick work?

Write each number's deviation from 100, cross-add one number with the other's deviation to get the left part, and multiply the deviations for the right two digits. For 104 × 107: 104 + 7 = 111 and 4 × 7 = 28, so the answer is 11128.

How do I square a number ending in 5 quickly?

Multiply the digits before the 5 by the next whole number and write 25 after the result. For 75²: 7 × 8 = 56, so 75² = 5625.

Is this Vedic Maths practice tool free?
