Based on the UPSC CSE 2026 notification, Para 3(II) age limits and Para 3(IV) number of attempts. Rules for 2027 onwards are assumed unchanged, so verify with the latest UPSC notification on upsc.gov.in. Ex-servicemen, Defence Services personnel and other special relaxations are not covered.
Key facts: UPSC age limit and attempts
- UPSC reckons age on 1 August of the exam year, not on the Prelims date.
- The minimum age is 21 for every category.
- The upper age limit is 32 for General and EWS, 35 for OBC and 37 for SC/ST. PwBD candidates get 10 more years, and the relaxations add up (cumulative).
- Attempts: 6 for General/EWS, 9 for OBC and for PwBD General/EWS/OBC, and unlimited for SC/ST within the age limit.
- An attempt counts only when you appear in at least one Prelims paper.
- EWS candidates get reservation but no extra age or attempts.

How to use the UPSC age calculator
- Enter your date of birth exactly as it appears on your matriculation (Class 10) certificate, which is the record UPSC accepts.
- Choose the exam year you are planning for: CSE 2027, 2028 or 2029.
- Pick your category and say whether you are a Person with Benchmark Disability.
- Enter how many attempts you have already used.
- Press Check eligibility to see your age on 1 August, your status, attempts left, your last eligible year and the born-between window.
How the calculation works
The notification says a candidate "must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years on the 1st of August". Turned into dates, that means you must be born not earlier than 2 August of (exam year − upper limit) and not later than 1 August of (exam year − 21). For CSE 2026, General category, that gives the official window of 2 August 1994 to 1 August 2005.
The tool compares your birth date with these two boundaries, so leap-day birthdays and month lengths are handled exactly. Your last eligible year is the latest year in which you are still under your upper limit on 1 August. Realistic chances are the smaller of your attempts left and the number of exam years left by age, assuming one CSE per year.
Worked example
Priya was born on 15 March 1996, is in the OBC category and has used 3 attempts. On 1 August 2027 she is 31 years, 4 months and 17 days old, under the OBC limit of 35, so she is eligible. She turns 35 on 15 March 2031, so her last eligible year is CSE 2030. She has 9 − 3 = 6 attempts left but only four exams (2027 to 2030) before she ages out, so she has 4 realistic chances.
Boundary birthdays: 1 August vs 2 August
A General candidate born on 1 August 1995 turns 32 on 1 August 2027 and is not eligible for CSE 2027. One born on 2 August 1995 is still 31 on that date and can appear. At the lower end, turning 21 exactly on 1 August is enough.
What this tool does not cover
Relaxations for ex-servicemen, ECOs/SSCOs and Defence Services personnel disabled in operations are not included. OBC relaxation applies only to candidates eligible for OBC reservation (non-creamy layer). PwBD eligibility also depends on the medical standards of the service allotted. Always check the official notification before you apply.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UPSC age limit for CSE 2027?
For CSE 2027, General and EWS candidates must be at least 21 and under 32 on 1 August 2027, which means born between 2 August 1995 and 1 August 2006. OBC candidates get up to 35, SC and ST up to 37, and PwBD candidates 10 more years over their category. This assumes the CSE 2026 rules carry over, so confirm it in the CSE 2027 notification due on 13 January 2027.
On which date is UPSC age calculated?
UPSC calculates age on 1 August of the exam year, not on the Prelims date or the last date to apply. You must have turned 21 by 1 August and must not have reached the upper age limit on that day.
How many attempts are allowed in UPSC CSE?
General and EWS candidates get 6 attempts, OBC candidates get 9, and SC and ST candidates have no limit on attempts as long as they are within the age limit. PwBD candidates get 9 attempts in the General, EWS and OBC categories and unlimited attempts in the SC and ST categories.
Does applying for UPSC count as an attempt?
No. An attempt is counted only if you actually appear in at least one paper of the Preliminary Examination. Applying and then skipping the exam does not use up an attempt.
Am I eligible if I turn 32 on 1 August of the exam year?
No, not as a General or EWS candidate. Turning 32 on 1 August means you have attained the upper age limit on the reckoning date, so you are out. A candidate born one day later, on 2 August, is still eligible that year.
