How the name and date are drawn
The photo is drawn on an HTML canvas at the target width and height. The name and date are then written as text in the font, size and colour you choose. With the white background option, a full-width strip is painted at the top or bottom first, and the text sits inside it, so it stays readable on any background.
Font size is in pixels of the final image, not of the preview. A 30 px font is clearly readable on a 600 px wide photo but looks tiny on a 3000 px wide phone photo. So set the target width first, then pick the font size.
Example: a 3024 × 4032 px phone photo resized to a width of 600 px becomes 600 × 800 px. A 28 px font with the white strip gives a bar about 71 px tall for two lines (name and date), which leaves most of the frame for the face.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add my name and date to a photo for an exam form?
Upload the photo, type your name and the date, pick Bottom Center with the white background bar, then download it as JPEG. The text is drawn onto the image in your browser, so the downloaded file already has the name and date printed on it.
Does UPSC require name and date on the photograph?
UPSC's current photo upload instructions on upsconline.nic.in do not ask for a printed name and date; they ask for a recent colour JPG photo of 20 KB to 200 KB with a plain white background. Some other recruitment notifications do ask for it, so follow the notification for your exam.
Which date should I write on the photo?
Write the date on which the photo was taken, unless your notification says otherwise. If the photo has EXIF data, this tool fills in that capture date automatically, and you can edit it.
Will adding text reduce the photo quality?
No. The photo is redrawn at the size you choose and the text is added on top. PNG output is lossless; JPEG output uses the quality slider, and 85 to 90 percent keeps the text sharp.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser and the photo never leaves your device. The last photo and settings may be kept in your browser's local storage so they reload next time; click Reset All to clear them.
Can I use this on my mobile phone?
Yes. The tool works in Chrome, Safari and other modern mobile browsers. On a phone, pick the photo from your gallery or camera and the download is saved to your Downloads folder.
