JPG vs PNG vs WebP: which to choose

FormatBest forTransparencyCompression
JPG / JPEGPhotos, exam form uploads, printing, emailNo (transparent areas turn white here)Lossy, quality 1–100
PNGScreenshots, logos, text, graphics with sharp edgesYesLossless, larger files
WebPWebsites and appsYesLossy or lossless; Google reports lossy WebP is 25–34% smaller than JPEG at similar quality

Example: a 1.8 MB PNG screenshot of a UPSC syllabus page converted to JPG at 90% quality usually becomes a few hundred KB, because JPG is designed for continuous-tone images. For a phone photo the opposite happens: converting a 2 MB JPG to PNG can produce a file of 8 MB or more with no visible improvement.

How the conversion works

Each image is decoded by your browser, drawn onto an HTML canvas at its full original resolution, and re-encoded in the format you choose with canvas.toBlob. Pixel dimensions do not change. When converting to JPG, the canvas is filled with white first so transparent PNG or WebP areas do not turn black.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert PNG to JPG online?

Upload the PNG, choose JPG in Convert to, set quality around 85 to 92 percent and click Convert all, then Download. Transparent areas become white, because JPG cannot store transparency.

How do I convert JPG to PNG?

Upload the JPG, choose PNG and click Convert all. The PNG is lossless from that point on, but it cannot restore detail the JPG already lost, and it is usually several times larger.

Which format do exam application forms accept?

Most Indian exam portals ask for JPG or JPEG; for example, UPSC's upload instructions ask for the photo and signature as JPG files. Check your notification, then convert to JPG here and use the Image Compressor if the file is above the KB limit.

Is WebP better than JPG?

For websites, usually yes: Google reports lossy WebP files are 25 to 34 percent smaller than comparable JPEGs. But some government portals and older apps do not accept WebP, so use JPG when a form asks for it.

Can I convert many images at once?

Yes. Select or drop several JPG, PNG or WebP files, pick one output format and click Convert all. Each file gets its own Download button and keeps its original name.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion uses the HTML canvas inside your browser, so your files never leave your device.
