1. Position your face (drag the box or use arrow keys; scroll or use the slider to zoom)
2. Preview (35 × 45 mm)
This only brightens the corners; it cannot remove a busy background. Passport Seva asks for photos unaltered by software, so leave it off for the upload size and shoot against a plain white wall instead.
How to make a passport size photo online
- Take a photo facing the camera against a plain white or very light wall, in even light, without glasses. Stand about 1.5 m from the camera so the face is not distorted.
- Upload it with Click to upload. The crop box already has the 35 × 45 mm shape.
- Drag the box (or use the arrow keys) and zoom until the face fills most of the box: top of the hair near the top edge, chin in the lower part, eyes level, head centred.
- Choose Print (413 × 531 px) for paper photos or Passport Seva upload (630 × 810 px) for the online form.
- Click Download passport photo, or Download 4 × 6 inch print sheet to print 8 copies on one photo paper.

How the mm to pixel conversion works
A photo file has pixels, not millimetres. The size on paper depends on the DPI (dots per inch) used when printing, and 1 inch is 25.4 mm. So pixels = mm ÷ 25.4 × DPI.
Worked example: width 35 ÷ 25.4 × 300 = 413.4, rounded to 413 px. Height 45 ÷ 25.4 × 300 = 531.5, rounded to 531 px. The Passport Seva size of 630 × 810 px has exactly the same 7:9 shape, so one crop works for both; it equals 35 × 45 mm at about 457 DPI.
The downloaded JPG stores this DPI in its header, so photo software and print shops print it at 35 × 45 mm when you choose actual size. If a printer scales it to fit the page, the photo comes out too big.
Common mistakes
- Face too small. A selfie from arm's length usually shows too much background. Zoom in until the face fills most of the frame.
- Busy or coloured background. This tool does not remove backgrounds. Re-shoot against a white wall rather than editing the background, since Passport Seva asks for unaltered photos.
- Shadows and flash glare. Face a window for soft, even light and avoid direct flash.
- Exam forms are different. UPSC, SSC and other recruitment forms set their own photo sizes and KB limits; follow your notification and use the Image Resizer or Image Compressor for those.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the size of an Indian passport photo?
An Indian passport-size photo is 35 mm wide and 45 mm tall (3.5 x 4.5 cm) on a plain white background. At 300 DPI that is 413 x 531 pixels, which is what this tool exports for printing.
What pixel size does Passport Seva need for an uploaded photo?
Passport Seva's ICAO photo guidelines ask for a colour photo of 630 x 810 pixels with a white background and the face taking up 80 to 85 percent of the photo. Choose the Passport Seva upload size in this tool to get exactly 630 x 810 px.
How do I convert 35 x 45 mm to pixels?
Divide millimetres by 25.4 to get inches, then multiply by the DPI. At 300 DPI, 35 mm is 413 px and 45 mm is 531 px; at 600 DPI it is 827 x 1063 px.
How do I print passport photos at home or at a shop?
Download the 4 x 6 inch print sheet and print it at 100 percent or actual size on 4 x 6 inch photo paper. The sheet holds 8 photos of 35 x 45 mm with light cut lines, and the file is tagged as 300 DPI so it prints at the right size.
Can I wear glasses in a passport photo?
No. Passport Seva's photo guidelines say glasses should be taken off to avoid reflections, and the eyes must be open and clearly visible.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. Cropping and export run in your browser with the HTML canvas, so the photo never leaves your device.
