How to make a QR code
- Type or paste a link, text, phone number or Wi-Fi string into the box.
- Choose the size, the code colour, the background colour and the error-correction level.
- Click Generate QR Code. After that, the code updates automatically when you change any option.
- Scan it once with your phone camera to check it.
- Click Download PNG for sharing and documents, or Download SVG for sharp printing at any size.
How QR codes work
A QR (Quick Response) code stores data in a square grid of dark and light modules. Larger content needs more modules, from 21 × 21 (version 1) up to 177 × 177 (version 40). Part of the grid is error-correction data, so a code can still be read when it is partly dirty or covered.
| Error correction | Damage it can recover from | Max text (bytes) |
|---|---|---|
| Low (L) | about 7% | 2,953 |
| Medium (M) | about 15% | 2,331 |
| Quartile (Q) | about 25% | 1,663 |
| High (H) | about 30% | 1,273 |
This generator adds a 4-module white border, called the quiet zone, around every code. Scanners need that border to find the code, so do not crop it off.

Key facts
- A static QR code stores its content directly and does not expire.
- Higher error correction makes a code more robust but holds less data.
- Dark modules on a light background scan most reliably.
- A quiet zone of 4 modules around the code is required by the QR standard.
Tips for codes that scan every time
- Keep contrast high. Dark code on a light background works best. Light-on-dark (inverted) codes fail on many phone scanners, and the tool warns you if you pick them.
- Print big enough. As a rough guide, make the code at least 2 × 2 cm, and larger if people will scan it from a distance.
- Shorten long links so the code has fewer modules and scans faster.
- Test before printing posters, notes or invitations, ideally with two different phones.
- Use SVG for print so the code stays sharp at any size.
Frequently asked questions
Is this QR code generator free?
Yes. It is completely free with no sign-up, no watermark and no usage limit. You can download each code as a PNG image or an SVG vector file.
Do these QR codes expire?
No. These are static QR codes: your text or link is stored inside the pattern itself, not on a server, so the code keeps working for as long as the link or text it contains is valid.
How much text can a QR code hold?
At the default Medium error-correction level, a QR code can hold up to 2,331 bytes of text. Low allows 2,953 bytes, Quartile 1,663 and High 1,273. English letters take 1 byte each, while Hindi and other Indian scripts take about 3 bytes per character, and longer content makes the code denser and harder to scan.
Which error correction level should I choose?
Use Medium for most purposes. Choose High if the code will be printed small, on rough surfaces or with a logo placed over it, because it can still be read when up to about 30% of it is damaged. Choose Low for very long text on a clean screen.
Does it work with Hindi and emoji?
Yes. Text is encoded as UTF-8, so Hindi, other Indian scripts and emoji are stored correctly. Most modern phone cameras decode UTF-8 QR codes.
Is my data uploaded to a server?
No. The QR code is generated in your browser. Your text or URL never leaves your device.
